Chapter 28 – 'Aftermath'

“And finally their trials were over, the four rode away to freedom, pushing their horses as fast as they could in case Princess Relena had managed to wake up and by some miracle get herself out of her bonds and socks and come after them. As dawn broke across the horizon with no sign of anyone chasing them, Duo and Heero knew they were safe. They reined in their horses and watched as the sun rose over the horizon,” read Uncle Howard.

“It's beautiful, isn't it?” Heero breathed as he watched the sun coming up.

“Not as lovely as you,” Duo murmured, his eyes watching Heero's profile as it was bathed in the soft yellows, reds and oranges of the wakening sun.

Heero blushed and turned his blue eyes to the man he loved.

Duo nudged his horse in the ribs, trying to get it to side step across to Heero's horse.

It didn't work.

“Shift, you lazy animal,” Duo snapped under his breath and gave the horse a sharp kick with his heel.

The horse shot forward, Duo almost falling off over its tail. Somehow he managed to bring it back to a halt.

“What are you doing?” asked Heero.

“I was trying to get this damn animal to step sideways so I could be along side you and hold you, kiss you and whatever else I could get away with,” Duo replied with a growl and glare at the horse's ears.

“You mean like this?” Heero did something with his hands and feet, his horse neatly side stepping across to Duo's.

Duo's eyes narrowed. “How did you?”

“You think I spent all my time just galloping my horse across the farm all those years ago?”

His answer was an affirmative shake of Duo's head.

“Not true. I had this secret passion for dressage. I'd practice each and every day, trying to be good enough to be selected for the Olympic dressage team and represent La Grange at the Olympics.”

“I never knew that,” Duo whispered. “What happened?”

“I finally realized that you actually have to go out there and compete in shows if you want to succeed.”

“Why didn't you?”

“You any idea how much it costs?”

“Good point. Although, I am the Dread Pirate Shinigami and I have a wealth of gold, silver and all that other rich stuff back on board my pirate ship. It could pay the way.”

“Duo! I would never dream of using ill gotten gains to further my career. Besides, the horse died so I've nothing to compete on now anyway.”

“Oh, well, the offer is still there if you should change your mind in the future. Now, where was I?” Duo leaned across and cupped his hand behind Heero's head, pulling the young man towards him. Their lips touched, the electricity crackled between them...

Uncle Howard stopped reading.

Zechs turned his head sharply and frowned at his Uncle. “What? Why did you stop?”

“It's that kissing and stuff again. You don't like it so I won't bother reading it,” replied Uncle Howard.

Zechs lowered his eyes. “It's okay, I don't mind it all that much,” he mumbled. Actually, young Zechs was finding the romantic scenes to be quite interesting and he was sure his uncle was leaving out parts he didn't think were suitable for him to hear. But puberty had already found Zechs and his young mind had started to sort out where his preferences lay.

“But earlier you said you didn't want to hear all the sappy stuff.”

“Really, it's okay.”

“It's just romantic crap, sappy kissing, not the kind of thing kids these days like.”

“Uncle Howard,” Zechs growled. “Please continue to read and finish the story.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.”

“Okay then. Don't say I didn't warn you. You may need a visit to the dentist after for all the cavities from the sap.”

“I'll take my chances.”

“Alright.” Howard picked up the book again and found his place. “The electricity crackled between them...”

Soft, pliant lips melted under his own and Duo closed his eyes to savor the taste of his love.

“Ow!” Heero pulled back sharply, the tingles still passing through his lips and jaw. He rubbed absently at his chin. “What the hell was that?” he demanded.

“I'm not completely sure, but I'd hazard a guess that it was electricity crackling between us,” Duo replied. “That sometimes happens.”

“Eh?” Heero scratched his head.

“You know, static electricity,” Duo said.

Heero shook his head. “Sorry, I think that electrical shock fried my neurons.”

“Static electricity refers to the build up of an electric charge on the surface of objects. The static charges remain on an object until they either bleed off to the ground or are quickly neutralized by a discharge. Although charge exchange can happen whenever any two surfaces come into contact and separate, a static charge only remains when at least one of the surfaces has a high resistance to electrical flow - an electrical insulator or in this case me as I underwent all that torture at the hands of Relena. The effects of static electricity are familiar to most people because we can feel, hear, and even see the spark as the excess charge is neutralized when brought close to a large electrical conductor - for example, a path to ground or you to me, or a region with an excess charge of the opposite polarity - positive or negative. The familiar phenomenon of a static 'shock' is caused by the neutralization of a charge,” Duo stated and sat back in his saddle looking rather smug. [1]

“Thank you for that enlightening piece of information, Einstein.”

“In simple terms, that spandex of yours rubbing against the leather of the saddle has given you a charge...”

“I'll give you a charge in a minute,” Heero muttered.

“...and when we kissed, the electricity build up found an exit through me – hence the shock.”

“Shock alright. I'm not kissing you again if that's going to happen every time.”

“There is one way to stop the static electricity from building up,” Duo said with a grin.

“And that would be?” Heero raised an eyebrow.

“Remove the spandex shorts.”

Heero didn't know whether to blush, glare of be horrified.

“Just kidding,” Duo chuckled.

“If you two have quite finished?”

Both Heero and Duo turned in their saddles to see a man/elf and Wufei watching them, amused smiles on their faces.

“If Heero's not going to let me kiss him again then I guess we're finished for the moment,” Duo stated with a grin.

Heero narrowed his eyes and gave his lover a glare. “Who said I wasn't going to let you kiss me again?”

“You did.”

“I said if I was going to get an electric shock every time I kissed you then I wouldn't be kissing you again; but you have come up with a solution to that problem so I guess we will kiss again, just not right now with an audience,” Heero huffed.

“That's good to know then.” Duo leered at Heero who rolled his eyes.

“My friends, we have come to the fork in the road...”

“Is it dinner time already?” Trowa questioned.

Wufei smacked his head with his hand. “A fork in the road as in two separate paths, not a fork as in the tine kind.”

“Oh. I thought it was a little strange when I couldn't see a knife or spoon either, not to mention the actual fork.”

Choosing to ignore his partner, Chang turned back to the other two. “It is time for us to leave you and take the left fork.”

“What will you do?” asked Heero.

“Trowa and I have decided to set up our own escort agency...”

“We have?” interrupted Trowa.

“Yes, we have.”

“Oh, okay then.”

With a sigh, Wufei continued. “We have the bonus of a couple of really good attractions to get us started and I'm sure that with my skills I can soon teach these pair the tricks of the trade. With Trowa's unmatched financial skills, not to mention his strength for protection, I'm sure we will have a thriving business very soon.”

“I have financial skills?” Trowa asked and stroked his skin.

“You handled the bartering with Miracle G well enough. I have faith in you,” Wufei replied. “In any case, if it doesn't work out well enough you can always join the other two and I'll make money off you too.”

“Sounds like a fair idea to me,” Trowa muttered. “What about you two?” he asked the pair of blankets still slung across the donkey's back.

“Something muffled and unintelligible came from one blanket. What sounded like a garbled 'Incon... Inconc... Oh, okay, just make sure they're gentle', came from the other.

Trowa nodded. “You have a deal, Wufei.”

“Good.” Turning back to the other two, Wufei concluded his little speech. “It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you both. I hope you find true happiness with each other; and if you don't, just pop in to my escort agency any time and I’ll fix you up with someone more compatible.”

“Thank you both, my friends, for all you have done for us,” replied Duo. “If you do find yourselves struggling at all, remember my offer from earlier. I still think you would make a wonderful Dread Pirate Shinigami.”

“Yes, thank you both,” Heero said. “If it hadn't been for you two and blondie there kidnapping me in the first place I would never have found my true love after all these years. I don't know how I can ever repay you both.”

“I could think of a couple of ways,” Trowa said with a slight leer.

Wufei smacked him upside the head. “If you ever need our services again, you know where to find us.”

“No, he won't, we haven't decided where we will set up shop yet,” Trowa stated in a tone that clearly said Wufei was in serious need of some sanity. “Once we do we can send him a card or something, then he will know where to find us.”

“Give me strength,” Wufei muttered.

“Why do you need strength? You have your sword skills.”

“Keep this up and you will find out just how good my sword skills really are.”

“Ohhh... You've been promising me more of your sword skills since we revived the dark one there and you've yet to pay up,” Trowa reminded him.

“In case it has slipped your mind, we have been a bit busy, what with avenging my father's death and rescuing the prince here.”

“I guess I can let you off then.”

“Thank you, that is most kind,” Wufei stated sarcastically.

“You're welcome,” Trowa replied, the sarcasm going right over his head.

“Thanks, but I think Duo will be able to handle the servicing part,” Heero interrupted, deciding he'd better otherwise they would still be here in a weeks time with the pair arguing the way they were.

“Farewell, my friends,” Duo said and began to turn his horse's head in the direction of the right fork.

“Take care.” Wufei waved and nudged his horse forward and onto the left fork.

“It's been a fun time,” Trowa said as he followed Wufei, the donkey plodding along behind him.

“I could have thought of much better ways to have had fun,” Heero muttered and ogled Duo's ass that was moving seductively in the saddle ahead of him.

“Bye!”

The two groups of friends parted company, Wufei and Trowa heading towards the city where they could set up their escort agency and go from strength to strength, making more money that either of them ever dreamed about. Heero and Duo rode along in companionable silence in the direction of Heero's farm.

Later that afternoon they arrived home at the place where their adventures had all started. The sun began to set over the horizon as the pair dismounted. Duo swept Heero into his waiting arms and crushed their mouths together. This time the static electricity stayed away; there was nothing but the hunger, the pleasure and sweet rapture of a kiss born of love.

“Since man discovered the kiss and that it was a good thing, there have been five kisses that have been rated the most passionate. This one left them all in the dust. The end.” Uncle Howard closed the book and turned to his nephew. “I think you should take a nap now. Your mother will be back very soon and I'm sure she expects you to be sleeping.”

Zechs felt a little disappointed with the ending of the story. Something about his Uncle's demeanor told him there was a little more to the story that he'd let on and Zechs was determined to find out just what that was. “Okay,” he replied.

Uncle Howard stood up and pulled the bed clothes a little tighter around Zechs. “So long.”

“Uncle Howard?”

“Yes?” Howard paused and turned to look at his nephew.

“You think you could come back tomorrow and read me the story again?”

“Hmmm, let me see.” Howard reached into his pocket and pulled out his diary. “Nope, can't do tomorrow, it's my bowling day. The day after that I'm catching up with some old friends who are in town for a couple of days.”

“Oh, I see. Then could you leave the book here and I'll read it myself tomorrow?” Zechs put on his best puppy dog eyes.

Howard smiled, which was pretty scary in itself and reached to the nightstand to place the book there. “Your wish is my command,” he said softly and with a tip of his sunglasses, he left the room.

Once his uncle was gone, Zechs reached for the book. Opening it up, he flicked quickly through the pages to the back of the book. “Hah! I knew he'd left some of it out,” he cried in triumph. Snuggling down into the mattress and under the covers, Zechs held the book close and began to read.
